'Master Plan Series' (a sand castle suburb consumed by the ocean) by Chad Wright

"I was raised in Orange County—a sprawling suburb of Southern California built by disciples of Levittown. We lived in a tract house, a symbol of the American Dream, just like our neighbors. Dad, a realtor, and mom, a preschool teacher, met while working at JCPenneys in 1970. We spent our summers in Breezy Point, New York, at the yellow beach bungalow that my grandma Stella bought with war bonds, unknown to grandpa who was stationed in Iwo Jima soon after they eloped. As children, my big brother Christopher and I would build cities in the sand, beneath the bungalow’s slatted porch floorboards.

In a series titled Master Plan, I am conflating a child’s sandcastle with architecture typifying postwar American suburbia. This three-part series culls artifacts from my childhood, investigating suburbia in its vision and legacy.Phase One focuses on the mass-produced tract house, re-examining it as symbol for the model American Dream."

A Band Called Death

Any regular readers out there in blog-land will know that SOB love us some gooood music documentaries. So when we were offered the opportunity to watch A Band Called Death earlier this month we jumped at the chance.

**SPOILER ALERT**

The film starts in 1970s Detroit where the three Hackney brothers who made up DEATH grew up and began their musical journey. Led by the eldest brother, David Hackney, the group shun the Motown sound which surrounds them and focus their attention on rock or as its described in the film, 'white boy music'. From this point on however their path is fraught with set-backs if for no other reason than the controversial name, which the record companies at that time, would not tolerate. Deals could have been struck if compromises were met, but integrity kept them from changing anything. A key thread that runs throughout the film is the importance of having belief in your own ideas and not allowing anyone to dilute the work that you want to create.

The sound that they created all those years ago is indisputably punk which now earns them the accolade of having created, 'punk before punk'. But this story is as much about the relationship of the three brothers and their loyalty to each other as it is about the music. It is difficult not to get emotionally involved as the remaining members talk about the premature death of David who was the creative force behind the band and the one who predicted that 'one day the world would come looking for this music.'

Ultimately whether you enjoy punk or not, if you have the slightest interest in music and its history we recommend that you to watch this film. We found A Band Called Death emotionally draining yet very inspiring, uplifting and life affirming.

A Band Called Death opens in selected theatres this Friday 28th June. It is also available on VOD and for digital download. Hit the LINK to find the best place for you to see it.

'The Passage' - upcoming release from Coarse Toys (July 6th)

This is one of Coarse's weirder releases. I must say, I really like the above aspect of the toy, but unfortunately, that is where my love affair with this one ends. Sure, it looks stunning in the photos (hit the jump below to see more pics) but would it look half as good on my shelf at home I wonder?

Despite my whinging I have to applaud Coarse for bridging the gap between toy and art. Their pieces are always elegant and well considered so I certainly wouldn't blame you for being tempted by this latest offering. Follow this LINK to read the full story behind 'The Passage' and for further details about the drop.
