Bishop Nehru - 'Nehruvia'

I came across Bishop Nehru (who's name is taken from Tupac's character in the 1992 movie, 'Juice') the other day after he opened for the DOOM/Ghostface show in London. He's got a free mixtape out called 'Nehruvia' which I've been listening to on repeat ever since! He's got a classic 90's, New York flow despite being just 15yrs old at the time of recording. Don't let his youth put you off though because this guy is sharp and wise beyond his years. Beat wise, this tape features classics from DJ Premier, J Dilla, Madlib & DOOM. He does sound like he belongs with the Pro Era crew but that just proves the level that this guy has already reached. Grab 'Nehruvia' HERE for free.

I'm not going to say too much about this except:
1) hit the jump to see how much amazing stuff you could potentially get for $50. Its incredible!
2) Make sure you are near a computer between noon and 2pm Central Time on Tuesday 30th April to bag yourself one of the 250 available.

A Band Called DEATH - new rockumentary from Drafthouse Films

Really enjoyed the last couple of music documentaries I've seen - 'Beats, Rhymes & Life' and 'Marley'. Got a few more on the list including 'The Upsetter', 'You're Gonna Miss Me' and now 'A Band Called DEATH'! The poster alone had me interested, but after watching the trailer below, I now really want to check this one out.

The film was directed by Jeff Howlett & Mark Covino and is being distributed by Drafthouse Films, with a theatrical release in selected cinemas on June 28th 2013.

"Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death’s music— and band name—too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Deathchronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers."

'Body Memory' - stop motion short film by Ülo Pikkov

from Ülo Pikkov on Vimeo.

Dark and harrowing yet in places almost funny, this is stop-motion animation at its best.

BODY MEMORY takes as its central concept the idea that our body remembers, not only individual experiences, but also the sorrow and pain of our predecessors. A powerful visualization of subconscious processes and the hidden horror of deportation. Inspired by historical events: the Soviet deportations from Estonia in the 1940s. Ülo Pikkov

'The Mystery Box' by Mick Minogue for Bad Robot @ Gallery1988

Its time to have a good ol' gawp Mick Minogue's new art piece which was made for the upcoming Bad Robot show at Gallery 1988. Allow me to hand you over to the man himself to tell you all about his latest geek-tastic creation.

Mick writes: 'Pretty excited to be showing as part of the Bad Robot Art Experience In Gallery 1988 this coming Friday. From what I have seen so far the work Is proper beezer so much Abrams wonders all over the shop.

'...I gotta tell ya this was a bitchin but hella difficult  to stick to one idea, there was just so much to choose from the Bad Robot collection. In the end I decided to go with one of my all time favourite Abram moments. Cloverfield. I just loved that build up, that was real cinema for me, that whole guessing game was genius and having the nod to Escape From New York with the Statue of Liberty head scraping up the street, I was turned to nerdy mush, just love it.....'

...'So I got to thinking, I wonder what the clean up was like In NYC after Cloverfield? Would have been a bitch getting that decapitated Liberty head outta the street. Homeless peeps slept under it, got tagged and I'm sure at the start It was a terrifying sight but soon the greatest tourist attraction ever. So my diorama Is all about mid clean up.
The little characters are all nods to Bad Robots catalogue or Abrams inspirations. In the door way of the Bad Robot offices 'the National Typewriter Company' there chills JJ the man himself all geared up for his next big adventure....'

'....Under the vandalised Liberty head with a little homage to my favourite 1980s New York artist there is a collection of Bad Robot inspirations. The kids from Super 8, Snake from Escape from New York, Locke from LOST. Then there are other less unknowns. Like Rod Sterling the Twilight Zone writer who was a hero of Abrams. Dustin Hoffman as Tootsie which Abrams counts as one of the greatest movies ever. An ape from Planet of the Apes because wherever there is a decapitated Statue of Liberty Head you'll surely find these dudes hanging out. In the background you have Spock under the teleported lamp light examining a strange specimen. In a basement window you can see one of  Abrams favourite Horror movie stars and last but not least who the Daddy of big budget cinema at its best just make things tidy. Also looking very confused after talking to Tootsie Is Bryan Burk Bad Robots co creator, a man who can't be forgotten....'

'....I decided to house this diorama In a Tannen's Magic Mystery Box. This was an idea given to me by my buddy Mr Steve. I had not seen JJ Abrams Ted Talk where he brings this box to the stage explaining why its such a big deal. His Granddad gave it to him as a gift and he has never opened it, it was remained closed and a constant mystery and inspiration. So In a sense I guess I guessed whats Inside.'

Bad Robot opens this Friday (April 26th) at Gallery 1988. Stay tuned to see more work from the show and hit the link below to see even more pics of Mick's piece....oh go on - you know you want to!

Locks Milky Bliss and Blush from Coarse Toys

Originally shown as part of the November 2012 'souls gone mad' solo exhibition in Chicago, Locks is about to be released as 11'' vinyl figures and will be available in two editions at www.coarsehkg.com [see below]. The unique piece was sculpted by Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk to accompany the legendary and previously released paw! on his hunt. Hit the 'MORE PICS HERE' link below for more snaps of these figures.

Locks Milky Bliss [white] and Blush [pink] are both 11'' in height, limited to 250 pcs and cost HK$ 1360 [approx. US$ 175] which includes global shipping.

Available for preorder on May 2nd, 2013 only at the coarse online store at the following times: 08:59 am Los Angeles, 11:59 am New York, 05:59 pm Hamburg, 11:59 pm Hong Kong.

Product blurb: With each emergence of the sun, the fruits grew bigger and fatter, the Locks inside them sprouting sleek heads and monstrous hands so big and heavy that their shells weakened before the creatures’ feet could grow. All at once, they came plummeting down from the trees, some so heavy they tore down entire branches. Angry at the captivity to which creation had confined them, each one sought a way out of the forest, using one hand to propel him far into the air and the other to break his fall and launch him forth again.

Along the way, they soared beneath a paw! tree as it sprinkled down fresh tiny monkey rabbits. For a moment, each creature stopped, their kernel brains trying to assess whether or not the foreigner was an enemy. The earth rumbled as the horde of newborns went out into the meadows together, freedom awaiting them in the boundlessness of their new world.
